SharePoint Restructure

Asked By: Vanraj    Date: Feb 27    Category: MOSS    Views: 1172

Im fairly new to sharepoint but starting to get a better understanding
of it. Here is my dilema, our current set up has over 30 web apps.
They were creating a new web app for any department asking for a site.
My sites dont work, search isnt working and just by looking at the set
up....lots of best practices werent used when they brought up Moss.

SO.....im going to reinstall Sharepoint and bring everything under 1
web app. Can i take the exisiting databases and migrate to the new
site? This is all Moss 2007.

I think that your best bet will be to backup and restore each Site

One option to consider is to use the stsadm tool to export each site
and then import then into the new SharePoint system when that is

stsadm -o export -url "sitename" -filename "site.cmp"

stsadm -o import -url "newsitename" -filename "site.cmp"

This would allow you to control where in the new hierarchy each
existing application goes.

In addition, at a minimum You will have to manually rebuild the Quick
Launch lists and the Top link bars to point to these new sites.

You should also review the security settings on each of the sites
after they are imported and change them to match your new setup.
