Asked By: Stephanie    Date: Oct 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1078

When, on the Portal Server, trying to start the Admin tool I get the following
message: "Unable to open the SharePoint Portal Server named '<servername>'"
I have no problem accessing the workspace via IE or Windows Explorer.

The same problem  occurred on my server. Without any reason, and I couldn't
set any security roles any longer.
The only solution we found was to restore a backup of the worspace on
another server.

This problem  sometimes occurs if you have done one of the following:

Renamed the server
changed the domain in which the server  lives
are not an administrator on the box.

I have had it occur to me a couple times in all of those situations. I will
need to look and see if I have the actual steps it took to fix it.

Usually this happens if the server  name changed after SPS was installed. You
will need to recreate a MMC admin  console for sharepoint. To do so launch MMC
add Snap-in and save it as the initial sharepoint.msc.
