Sharepoint Portal Searchbar placement

Asked By: Carter    Date: Nov 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 748

Does anyone know how to change the placement of the search bar on the main portal page to be on the left hand side, and remove the “All Sources” drop down box? I’ve edited the main SPS\default.aspx and change things in there, but I’d prefer to change it in something like SPSCustom\Default.aspx, and I’m not seeing how to change the searchbar so that it doesn’t include the “All Sources” drop down box.

You can just move the entire search  control over within the
default.aspx code, but as for getting rid of the drop-down,

I'm pretty sure that you cannot modify the SPSWC: controls. They are
definitely server controls and I have not found a way to get at them.
The only suggestion I received when I wanted to customize the
SPSWC:ToolBar, was to load the sps.dll into Lutz Roeder's Reflector
for .NET (http://www.aisto.com/roeder/dotnet/).

You then compile your own dll and reference that in your aspx  page. I
have never attempted this, so I don't know if it is a valid solution.
It would be a whole lot easier if you could call a css class as a
property of the control, but unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be
that simple.

If you don't want the sources drop-down box, then dump the control
altogether. All you should need is a simple HTML form with a single
textbox named "k" Action is a "GET" sent to /Search.aspx

I haven't tried but I'll bet you could hide it using a Content Editor
Web Part and some custom CSS or JavaScript.
