Sharepoint - Ideas

My manager had me install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and it's configured
and running. The only thing is I don't see how our IT department of 7 people
can use this? Any ideas would be great? All the examples from microsoft
touch on huge collaboration projects (schools or large departments).

Here is a link to some templates. I played around with these and I was able
to get a pretty good feel of the uses for sharepoint  were.

You can use sharepoint  for document management. So all documents from the it
department are placed on the portal. We use it also for absence tracking, a
calendar web parts and everyone can add his holidays into it. For example,
tips and tricks can be placed in a list, there are some many possiblities.
The best thing you can do is first familiarize yourself with the
possibilities of SharePoint, by checling out blogs, web sites or reading a
book about sharepoint.

I have also installed Sharepoint 2003 and would also like to use it for
absence tracking ( calendar web parts) and so everyone can add their
holidays into it. Are you able to let me know how you did this.

It appear you are missing the point on what websites are for. There
are dozens of things you can do with an IT website. Here's a few examples.

For all your users: 1) post standards, 2) post User Guides, 3) post links to
key application training, 4) post processes (software purchase request
process, IT Help Desk process, etc), 5) post logon script mapped network
drives and what they should be used for, 6) post reference technical support
website links for commonly used applications within your company, 7) post
network printer names and locations, 8) post IT Projects being worked based
on user requests

For the IT department: 1) use the SharePoint Help Desk Application Template
as a Help Desk tool to organize, prioritize and track all your Help Desk
requests/tickets, 2) post the IT staff Roles and Responsibilities, Typical
Working Hours, Vacation Calendar, 3) post an IT Admin Guide for documenting
your Inventory, main application start-up/shutdown procedures, backup and
recovery processes, important tech support and vendor contact info, etc.

Are you getting the idea here? It's a way to organize all your information,
documents, processes and tech support in one spot so it's easy to find when
you need it.
