Sharepoint Hardware Architecture

Asked By: Heena    Date: Apr 24    Category: MOSS    Views: 1022

I am involved in my first proper sharepoint implementation and I was
hoping for some advice on hardware setup.

The client has suggested the following architecture and I would like
to try and advise better for him:

Two processors

SQL 2005 Box
4 Processors

3 VMWARE'd Machines
1 for indexing 2 for web front ends.

The SQL Box especially is costing loads in terms of licensing, so I
wanted to give him advice on perhaps dropping maybe 2 of the

If anyone could give suggestions of what kind of hardware setups
they've used in the past that would be great.

I'm a little confused - what is the difference between the MOSS Box and
the 3 VMs - is it the VM host?

On the SQL licensing front, SQL Server is per-CPU, not per core, so you
might consider 2 dual (2 CPU licenses) or 1 quad (1 CPU license) core
CPUs instead of 4 single core (4 CPU licenses).

The question that needs to be asked is about what kind of load is
going to be put on your Sharepoint Farm and do you really save cost
or rack space by going with a VM solution? I would post what load
you expect and maybe more people will respond who have implemented
the same senerio.

One more thing, are you planning on VM one server into three
machines, 2 WFE and 1 Indexing server. I would not suggest this,
just use your MOSS box to run all the services since it is the same
hardware. Make sure you run 64bit MOSS.
