Coasworks provide an action runtime interface that allows you to
add/modify/publish/ send email/delete on mutiple rows  within lists and document
libararies. You can also use it to steamline what questions you want to ask on
lists at different points.
say you have a helpdesk list and the requester only need to fill metadata 1-5
metadata 6- 20 is for the help desk staff to deal with
u can just create an action say submit request and it wil only ask question 1-5

this looks good for document libraries but I am looking for a simple
grid that via SharePoint will allow you to connect to a database and modify  data
in the table in SQL Server.

Still lookin.,...looks like nobody makes such an animal.
