SharePoint Database indexes in SQL

  Asked By: Ganesh    Date: Apr 18    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 911

I got a question from my DB Admin yesterday. He was wondering how often
the SharePoint Databases in SQL should be reorganized or rebuilt? He
noticed that the fragmentation on most of the SharePoint was pretty
high. He just wanted to know what the best practices would be....

You can probably reindex every couple of weeks or so, depending on how
badly fragmented your indexes  get. Rebuilding the index is a fairly
intensive process and should only be done during maintenance windows.
If you're running SQL 2005 make sure you have SP2 installed or
rebuilding the Index will break SharePoint;

Here is an article that provides a stored procedure you can use to defragment
the indexes:

Correction: I think the link for the db defragmentation stored procedure should
be: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943345/
