Sharepoint Backup

Trying to backup the SP databases so I can restore
them on a new server, but the backup fails with a
rights error.

Any ideas what could be wrong? The services are all
started correctly.

The sitedbs backs up fine but the index fails.

Are you using Windows Scheduler to run this? If so, does the account have enough privileges? How about the account that runs the backup? Does it have sufficient privileges to write to your d: hard drive?
