Sharepoint Alerts

Asked By: Angelique    Date: Nov 04    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1092

I was curious if SHarepoint has the abillity to set alerts on specific
values? For example, please send an email if a number goes beyond a
certain threshold. We are planning to use Sharepoint for an
operational dashboard pulling data out of a SQL Server. IF this can't
be done using Sharepoint, would the reporting services within SQL
Server be able to do this?

I'm not sure of the answer, but your request kind of made me laugh.

That's like saying "I'm gonna drive this here car, but I'm not going to watch
the speedometer. Instead, I want you to pinch me when I go over the speed

Does performance point do this ?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying. I want the dashboard  to be there, but if
I don't have the dashboard up, I want to be alerted to an issue if it arises by
email or maybe text message.

There are a couple of ways you could do this.

You can setup alerts  on views of lists. So you would setup a view/filter to show only items that are above the threshold and then setup an Alert on that view.

See "Setting up Alerts on a View of a List"

The limitation of this is you can't use views that filter on calculated columns IIRC.

Otherwise you are either looking at Workflow or a 3rd party product such as (blatant plug) Pentalogic Reminder - www.pentalogic.net/sharepoint-products/reminder
, Bamboo's Alert Plus or SharePointBoosts AlertBoost.
