once you turn shared  services on, there is no going back.

we taken backup of the existing portal and trying it restoring it in another server.
We faced the following issue and got the following error.

The portal site being restored uses shared  services, but there is no shared services  provider configured for the current server farm. Restore this portal site to a server farm that has a shared services provider.

Can anybody faced the issue like this..

This reigns true in sharepoint  2007 as well. They give you a much more thorough warning about how "the content databases will be modified" and yada yada yada. If you are extending shared  services you want to make sure you take a complete backup of all your sharepoint databases before you click OK in case you need to roll back.
