We have a discussion web part on a SP 2003 site where the
discussions are moderated by the site admin. Everyone else is a
contributor on the site and can subscribe to alerts for this discussion
web part. Any new posts are put into the pending status before being
approved by the moderator. However I noticed (and maybe you are already
familiar with it) when a new post is submitted, an alert gets issued to
other contributors. In the middle of the alert email, there is a
discussion board summary which gives you a link to the 'pending' item.
Even tho this particular post has NOT been approved by the moderator,
other contributors can view this info via that link in the alert email.
This kind of defeats the purpose of moderating the discussion board.

Has anyone come up with solutions to this problem where the
contributors are restricted to only 'approved' items? Pls share how you
have handled it, if at all.
