Shared Services Providers Database

Asked By: Emanuel    Date: Sep 27    Category: MOSS    Views: 1190

Does anyone know how to deal with the error "Cannot connect to the
configuration database" when clicking on the link to the shared service
providers on the SSPADMIN page. I thought it would be straightforward
and just a matter of reconnecting the database. However, the relevant
page ("Restore SSP") in "Managing this farm's Shared Service Providers"
doesn't seem to help. I have followed the instructions on page 659 of
the Office SharePoint Server 2007 Administrator's Companion but they
seem to disagree with what the web page actually does. In particular
after completing all the fields and clicking OK it then warns "We
recommend using different web applications to host the SSP
Administration site and My Sites.". Actually I was but I don't care
anymore so I click OK. It then fails completely with the error:

A SharePoint database named MOSS_SharedServices_DB already exists. You
must supply another new name for the database.

But this doesn't make sense. How can I reconnect an existing database by
using a name that doesn't exist. I'm not trying to create a new one.

Is this yet another bug in SharePoint or have I done something wrong?
