is share point able to deal with an SQL database ?

Currently no, but I heard in the next release it will. Actually the next
release, SharePoint will be using SQL instead of the Web Storage System.

And will Microsoft keep workflow foundation with Sharepoint?

They will maintain the existing workflow as well as enhancing it.

Then, with Visual Basic .NET and SQL will be a truly complete intranet
environment very difficult to beat.

Will be needing .NET server?

I don't know about the .NET server. Supposedly it's coming out in the Spring and
I also heard that SharePoint will be tightly integrated with the .NET server, in
what way, I'm not sure

Integrated in terms of following the .NET framework for ASP.NET among other
things.

There are no generic iFilters for a SQL database  because it is
relational. What are you wanting to do?
