Is the Setup User Account necessary?

Asked By: Imran    Date: Oct 14    Category: MOSS    Views: 1008

Microsoft documentation lists the need for a Setup User Account to
install SharePoint and any updates. Project 2007 lists it as well.

The Plan for Administrative and Service Accounts in the SharePoint SDK:
technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263445.aspx seems to be a
source for other MS docs and numerous blogs, but it doesn't give a
reason to have to create an account.

Does anyone know if using different accounts that have the correct
rights causes any issues? Is the Setup User Account necessary?

The account  used to install SharePoint is given some special permissions and is
sometimes the only way to do things. I've seen one instance where that account
was the only one that could successfully uninstall SharePoint after there were
some issues on the SQL server. I talked to someone on the product group (forgot
who exactly) and he confirmed that the install account does hold some special
permissions. He was kinda cagey about exactly what it was. I get the
impression that there were some security considerations involved and he wouldn't
divulge them. Must be my shifty eyes.

Using a setup  User account  is not actually required, but it is a Best Practice.
There will be times in the future when you will need to use the same account
that you used when you setup SharePoint for applying updates, for example when
you apply SP1. If you use a regular account or a service account used for other
things you will run the risk of having changes security settings or forgetting
which account you used to do the setup. This can cause problems. I recommend
using a setup account and then storing that account and its password in a safe
