Setup of MOSS 2007

Asked By: Ralph    Date: Jun 04    Category: MOSS    Views: 718

I have 2 setup related questions. When we installed MOSS2007, we
installed MOSS 2007 Enterprise version instead of Standard which is
what we should have installed but now we need to add another server to
the farm. My question is, can i install MOSS 2007 Standard on the WFE
and add it to the farm that is running MOSS 2007 Enterprise?

My 2nd question is related to SQL. Our farm is currently running on 32-
bit environment. Is it ok if we were to upgrade our SQL cluster to 64-
bit and leave MOSS2007 on the 32-bit environment? Or would there be any
issues with that setup?

You can fix a 32-bit FE server with a SQL 64Bit server, but you can't fix 32-bit
and 64-bit FE servers. I suspect that you don't want to mix Enterprise and
non-Enterprise FE servers. Enterprise features need to be turned on, so it
might(?) be possible if you didn't turn on the Enterprise features, but I
wouldn't take the chance.

A couple clarifications -

1) Mixing SQL x64 and x86 WFEs is fine and supported

2) Mixing x86 and x64 WFEs is supported, but not recommended due to
issues that can occur when attempting to load-balance differing hardware

3) The install bits for Standard and Enterprise are the same - the
difference in only in the product key. If you add another machine to the
same farm you will pick up the configuration that already exists in the farm
(Enterprise in your case).

...adding to the pile...be careful mixing 32bit and 64bit search components. For
example, there are issues with 32bit query and 64bit index. Not sure if this was
resolved in Sp1, but I doubt it. I seem to remember a KB or Technet article, but
have limited access and can't search for it.
