I am required to put up an extranet using WSS sp2. as i was
reading the instruction in microsoft it talks about reverse Proxy
setting on ISA server. Is it possible to host extranet without touching
the isa server ?

host  a large WSS site on our extranet  and we've never used ISA. WSS v2 is
kind of inconsistent about URLs, and ISA makes that hurt a lot less. Our site
is accessible via the same URL internally and externally. If you don't use ISA
I think you'll have to go that road as well. Because of that we also force SSL
internally, so that all of the URLs in WSS are https://fqdn. If you do those
two things, and keep security in mind (only forward port 443 from the Internet,
strong passwords, etc) then you should be fine.
