How to set Alerts for a WSS Site ?

How do I set “Alerts” for a complete site? What I mean is whatever changes that happen to the site I should get an alert message. Now I’m able to set alerts on individual items, which I don’t want to and also if a new item/document is added I have to go back and set the alert for the new item again.

So instead of all these, is there any way that I can set alerts for the entire site?

Site-wide alerts  are not an out-of-the-box piece of functionality.
