Service Pack

I have a quick question. We are using MOSS 2007. Do I need to install
WSS Service Pack 2. When I go to install just the service pack for
office SharePoint server 2007, I get a popup that says that Microsoft
recommends that I install the service back for WSS 3.0 first.

What are the best practices?

If you have MOSS 2007 then you need to install both the WSS Service Packs

I am glad I double checked. Since I

As a quick  note you should know that WSS absolutely is installed on your server.
MOSS can only install over WSS. I wasn't sure from your post if that was already

No it was not a given. I wasn't sure if it was installed since 1) we
didn't install it as a separate download 2) it is not included in
add/remove programs.

I did a little reading this morning and from my understanding, WSS is
included with the download of MOSS 2007. Is that correct? But you
"install" WSS separately if you do not want MOSS.

Is this correct?

Moss is built on a foundation of WSS. So when you install MOSS you install
all the code from WSS as well. It doesn't get installed as a separate
product, so it doesn't show in remove programs. If you want to install just
WSS you can, but that doesn't include the assemblies for MOSS. They are
treated as two separate products, but everything in WSS is also included in

When applying service  packs, yes, you need to install the WSS service pack
first, and then install the MOSS service pack. You need to install these on
all your SharePoint servers before you run the config wizard to finish the
