Sequential Number Generator

Asked By: Demarco    Date: Mar 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 9560

Does anyone know of a web part or how I can create a field that will
automatically generate a sequential number? I am using WSS 2003. The
field will be in a Task List. The user I am developing this list for
wants unique numbers in the field so no duplicates will be kept. I
suppose if there is some way to make the field unique and not allow
duplicates, then that might work as well.

You could possibly add a new calculated column to the list. Then, add
a formula that counts the number  of items + 1. This would give you an
incremental value for your calculated column.

I know very very little about creating formula for calculated columns
in lists, but maybe someone else out there can give you some guidance.

Technically there is already a field  that does this. In the views
that you want to expose a sequential  number just go to Manage Settings
and Columns, go to the bottom of the page select the view you want to
expose the ID in and then look for the field called ID and select the
check box. This field basically is already doing what your talking
about and all data items have this already assigned so you can apply
it to lists that already exist!

You can make use of the ID field  to achieve this. The entries in the ID column gets automatically incremented with the addition of records in the list. You can go to the VIEW settings to show or hide this ID field of the list.
