"Send To" Custom location not working for Pages Library

Asked By: Sarojini    Date: Sep 20    Category: MOSS    Views: 2214

I googled a lot, but didn't get a proper solution. There is an option
(configurable) in Document Libraries to send the document / file / page to
another location, which can be configured in the Advanced Settings of the
document library. This is working for Image / Picture Library and normal
document libraries, but not for Page Library. Can anyone provide some
solution for this? If it doesn't work at all, I would have to write custom
code to achieve this. But I am not sure about moving the Page / Document
along with versions to another location, using code. Any quick help will be
really appreciated, as nothing much came up in Google search.

The Pages document library has been customized to depend on the use of Page
Layouts to render the pages. Because of the custom code it can't use the
normal Send To capability. Even if it could, sending a file in the pages
library to another location would render it unusable so there is no reason
to do it. Why are you trying to move publishing pages anyway?

(Also, be aware that Send to only moves the current version, not all

The customer wants this, as they want to keep unused files in a
document library, rather than deleting them. This document library could
hold all kinds of files.

Send To only sends a virtual copy of the document from one library to another.
This is useful when you want users to view, but not be able to edit, a document,
and keeps the original intact.

Since your customer wants to retain unused files, perhaps you should implement a
Records Center and workflow to move, hold and archive those files, and set rules
on how they're handled, i.e. viewed, thereafter.

Actually, that's not true. Send To delivers a full copy of the document to
the destination. The copy is kept linked to the original so that it can be
easily updated if the author changes the original. But both are fully
editable copies. One of the reasons for using Send To would be to move a
copy of a document from a working location to a published location. If you
do that you can continue to work on the original WITHOUT those changes
showing up in the copy until you choose to send a new version using the
established link. The link just makes it easy because I don't need to
remember all the places I may have sent copies of the document.

Also, send to wouldn't remove the original document. Since it sounds like
the client wants to archive unused files you really should use a workflow
for this.
