Can a secondary portal be created on a virtual server

Can a secondary portal be created on a virtual server created without a new
port or IP address?

In IIS 6.0, I can create a virtual server without specifying a new IP or
port if I use host headers. These virtual servers work fine for creating new
top-level team site collections.

Can the same approach "host header" virtual servers be used to create
secondary (child) portals sites? The reason I'm asking is that we're having
a problem with this. Once the first virtual server is extended, it appears
that all of the additional virtual servers have also been extended.

we don't have problems with that approach:

1. Create a new Virtual Server using host  Header (Create DNS or host entry)
2. Create new Portal ( /sps/PortalCreate.aspx)

Yes and No

In order to create  a new portal, you need a new IIS virtual  Web site  with
included either new port, and/or new IP and/or host  HEADER. I.e. You can use a
host header  with the same IP Address.

THe bottom line is you cannot have 2 virtual web site on the same box using the
same port unless they have different host header

Unfortunately I beelive Host Header are not supported with SSL encryption

SPS03 does not support unique IP+Port combinations on a per VS basis. AIUI, host  headers are the *only* way to do this.

There is a 1:1 relationship between virtual  servers and portals.

There is a 1:1 relationship between site  collections and virtual servers  if the SC is created  outside the portal  via central administration.

There is a many:1 relationship between site collections  and a virtual server  if the SC is created “inside” the portal through the sites  directory or personal sites in My Site.
