Searching issue

Asked By: Jordon    Date: Oct 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 948

I am having an issue with searching sites. I can do a searching in a
sub-site but when I try to it will come back with no results found and
ask if I want to go up one level and keep trying to search. Once I do
that it comes back with the results from the sub-site. I'm also getting
errors in Event Viewer. It comes back with event ID 3036 and a message
like this

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Microsoft SharePointPS Search Service

I have full text searching enabled on the SPS 2003 box. It looks like
the issue is pointing back to SQL and I never claimed to be a DBA.

Sounds like you might be confusing SPS and WSS search. Are you talking about
sites, sub-sites or areas in each case? WSS search  uses SQL Full text indexing,
but that is only exercised when you are actually on a page in a site or
sub-site, not when you are in the portal. SPS search is used whenever you are
in a portal page and uses a search index which is periodically rebuilt by the
Gather process you are seeing messages from in your event  log. SQL Full text
indexing is internal to SQL and done realtime as items change.

1. You need to enable Full Text Searching when you point back  to a SQL
server
2. These are sub-sites
3. It's recognizing the search  in the search schedule but it's not
showing up in the results

You are still not clear on some points I think. The search  schedule is for SPS
search only, and if you are searching  in a sub-site  you are using WSS search
which doesn't use the index it creates. You also said that you were getting
results from a sub-site from a parent site, which cannot happen which is why I
asked you to clarify. WSS search is used for sites  and sub-sites when you
search from a page in that site. You will only get results  from the site you
are searching from, not any of the sub-sites. The only way you would get these
results is if you are confusing sites with SPS areas and and instead using the
SPS search.

The search  works from the portal area works fine. The WSS sites  are
where the problem is. When you do a search there nothing comes back
unless you go back  to the portal area.

Ok, in that case it is entirely an issue  with SQL Full text indexing or you are
trying to find content that is not in the site you are currently searching  from
(that includes subsites).

The content is on the site I am attempting to search  from.

Please forgive the typos from the previous messages. I have about 10
things going on at once.
