Search settings page - unknown error message

Asked By: Cameron    Date: May 18    Category: MOSS    Views: 2060

I have two farms where the search settings page in SSP admin are inaccessible
and displaying "unknown error" sharepoint page:

There have been no recent changes and these two farms are on different versions
(MOSS SP1 and pre SP1).

I've checked event viewer and sharepoint logs to no avail.
Any assistance is appreciated.

If you edit the web.config files of the SSP web apps and make two changes you
will be able to display more detailed error  messages that may provide more
information. Once you have the information I would recommend changing the
web.config files back to their original settings. The two changes to make are
as follows:

1) Search for CallStack and change the setting from "Off" to "On".
2) Search for CustomErrors and change the setting from "On" to "Off".

These settings  are case sensitive, but once you make them and try to browse to
the SSP admin page  you will get a stack dump and exception report in place of
the Unknown error page.
