Search Service Not Working

I'm having problems with the search service in MOSS 2007. When I try to search
for something I get this error:

"The search request is unable to connect to the search service"

I've tried the fixes at the following links. No joy. :(

This one says to check for adequate disk space. There is 177GB of free space on
the drive.

When I click "Search Settings" for my SSP in CA I get this error:

"The search service is currently offline. Visit the Services on Server page in
SharePoint Central Administration to verify whether the service is enabled. This
might also be because an indexer move is in progress."

Finally I found this site which looked promising.

I followed the instructions, and it built the new search folder. Still no joy!

Now I get this error on the front end site when searching:

"Your search cannot be completed because of a service error. Try your search
again or contact your administrator for more information."

Still the same error when trying to get to search settings on CA!

try this I was in the same situation a few weeks back and had MS support ticket
for same.

Is osearch14 in SP2007? Google says 2010.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm getting a bunch of errors in the event log. I
will be googling those to see if I can get this fixed!

Event IDs include 6398, 2406, 10030 and some others.

Anyone got a fix for that? It seems like I've missed a step in getting the
search service re-configured. I've looked and looked for a solution but I've not
found the answer.

Just to close the loop on this, I found the solution. Apparently the search
service acct had lost registry permissions. So I added it back in, and search
worked although with no results since stopping the search service deletes the
index content. So after I started a crawl results started showing back up.
