Search Service Error

When I browse to the Manage Search Settings on the SharePoint Portal
Server Central Administration page, I get an error message that says:

Failed to initialize search service settings.
An error occurred attempting to connect to the requested indexing
server.

I've checked the search services and indexing services on this
computer and they all seem to be running. Any suggestions?

check the account, the SharePoint services  are running  (SharePointPS Search,
TimerService etc). Which permissions does this account have on the SQL
Server? (must be at least Security administrator and Database creator. Check
the identity of application pool the Portal is using.
Reenter password and UserID in the Server Farm Account-Settings page  within
SharePoint Central administration...
