Search not starting and logs indicating an application isn't found

Asked By: Aiesha    Date: Nov 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2746

Looking for help here before I just try a complete reinstall.

New to SharePoint and I have a mostly working install. I have a SSP, a
portal site, and a mysite. I can log in fine, create new sites, add
users, use web parts, etc. But the Windows Sharepoint Services Search
won't start. When I try to start it, I get the somewhat generic error
"This server is not the indexer of this search application."

The install is all on one box currently, but it's a full farm
enterprise install with SQL Server 2005.

The SSP has a different admin account than the Central Admin. When I
try to start the search service through Central Admin, I've tried both
the Central Admin and SSP credentials. I've tried using STSADM -o
editssp to reset the index location and the index server. I've checked
that the accounts all have access on the system and to SQL Server.

Looking in the logs, this is the most troubling thing I see cropping
up repeatedly:

No thoughts on why I would be getting the "Unable to find
application..." errors in the logs? I'd really like to get the
existing install working  rather than reinstall  from scratch again.
