search on list columns

Asked By: Andrea    Date: Jan 17    Category: MOSS    Views: 1023

I have a client who wants to migrate 500K contacts to SharePoint, either with a
custom database or List approach. The idea is to have search on all the fields
(site columns if list ) and the feature should allow search as you type feature.

What would you advise me to do in terms of which would be most efficient(least
amount of development) and extensible approach.

Also how good is OOB MOSS search on list columns, I saw Bamboo has a webpart
which does that . Any custom development approach on this feature.

To address your second question: MOSS Search will deal with that many
items; it uses SQL Server indexing, as I recall.

Off the top of my head:
I'm a big fan of search-as-you-type using jQuery. Produce the list  of contacts
as an XSLT table on a page and grab a search-as-you-type plugin.

There are many other possible options...
