How to - Search Core Results

Has anyone been able to slightly modify the OOTB Search Core Results webpart to
be able to change a few elements there? I am trying to get a custom field value
(Topic) to show up as the link heading in my hit results list and I just can't
get it to work. I have followed the instructions set forth by MS, but to no
avail. Here is the link I was working from. Either nothing happens or I got an
error message in the webpart saying that it couldn't do what I asked.

Again, I just want to be able to do a few minor things and everything I've ready
leads me to believe that it should be relatively painless.

Also, does anyone know how to get the contextual edit menu to show up for the
given hit result? For example, this would let users directly checkout documents
or edit metadata of the document directly from the hit results set? It would be
nice to connect directly to the list the item is in.
