"Save site as template" a problem?

Asked By: Aiesha    Date: Jul 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 7572

I often use the option to "save list as template" or "save site as
template" in WSS 2.0 so I can easily create some standard templates
for myself and others to use. We don't have anyone on site to
develop new site definitions, so this is the only real option we

I'm a bit paranoid about potential upgrade problems, and I wanted to
know if this could cause any trouble. I feel like I remember hearing
that, when creating a list or site from a template created from
another list or site, the new list or site is not connected to the
original site definition. Does that make any sense? Will this pose
problems later this year when we begin the upgrade to MOSS/3.0?

Rant: I wish Microsoft wouldn't make things that are potentially
harmful or bad practices SO EASY. They promoted use of Frontpage,
yet you had to learn about unghosting problems from the MVPs. They
promote use of folders in libraries, yet you had to learn about the
better practice of using columns and views from the MVPs. They
promote creating templates from existing lists and sites...will an
MVP tell me there are potential problems w/ that practice as well?

Anyway, thanks in advance for answering my question and listening to
my rant!
