How to save a big list

Asked By: Jill    Date: Sep 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1805

My client wants to save data from a portal list, e.g., a discussion board, to a
file. The list data is quite big (> 10MB).

If the data is small enough, I could save the list as a list template including
content. With that I can import the saved .stp file and restore the data to
another site.

But if the data is big (a lot of binary attachments -- 50MB or more), saving as
a list template won't work. I need a mechanism to save the data and restore and
present data in a reasonable format. I am thinking doing some development
(iterate through the list and save each list item).

There must be some simple existing solutions out there.

This is still for SharePoint 2003, and I only spend less than 5% of time to
maintain the site built 2 years ago - so I am really behind.

Stsadm.exe -o setproperty -propertyname max-template-document-size
propertyvalue 50000000

Permits a template  up to 500MB in Windows SharePoint Service 3.0.

There was a similar setting in SharePoint 2003.

I don't recall exactly how we set it but this should help your search.

You can extend the maximum template  size by running:

stsadm.exe -o setproperty -propertyname max-template-document-size
-propertyvalue 50000000

500Mb is the maximum size (last I heard)

Is 500 MB MOSS2007 limit or it also applies to 2003? Any suggestion if the limit
is reached? Besides restoring the saved data  in the portal, is there any other
media that can present the data in a desirable format?
