Is there a way to get the rich content editor to work in Firefox for Mac
or in Safari?

There is no better means of promoting another person's change of heart

No, the rich editor is Internet Explorer only. However, Microsoft
have sponsored Telerik to create an alternative editor. This
alternative supports Firefox, Safari etc with similar features. It
is available for free from Telerik's web site. They are also working
on a commercial version with additional features.
