Restore entir eportal on new machine

Asked By: Ganesh    Date: Dec 10    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1056

I simply cannot figure this out. Anyone please help.

On one machine I backup from the sps backup and name the manifest as
test.
I import all the files on the target machine, create a virtual server
on the target machine. I go to central administration and chose to
restore a portal site.
I select the virtual server I created in site url and under restore
portal from database, I have these choices,

In the Database server box, select the database server that hosts the
site database.
-I select the destination machine name from the list as it is the
only one avalable.
In the Database name box, type the name of the site database from
which you will restore the portal.
-Here I enter, SourcePortalServer_SITEDB

In the User profile database server box, select the database server
that hosts the user profile database.
-I select the destination machine name from the list as it is the
only one avalable.
In the User profile database name box, type the name of the user
profile database from which you will restore the portal.
-Here I enter, SourcePortalServer_PROF

In the Services database server box, select the database server that
hosts the services database.
-I select the destination machine name from the list as it is the
only one avalable.
In the Services database name box,
-Here I enter, SourcePortalServer_SERV

Strangely I dont get any options, to select the saved manifest file
from the source. Anyways, when I click on 'Ok' now, I get an error
message,
"You cannot connect to the database, or the database does not exist.
Check that the database name is correct, and then try again.
(SourcePortalServer_SITEDB)

Please advise. What am I missing. Any configuration in SQL itself on
the destination server.

-------------------------------------------

The second option I have tried is to use the sps restore tool.
I select restore, -> it displays only the first portal site I created
on the destination machine. It doesnt display the other portal sites
I created (which confuses me, shouldnt it display all the portals
avaliable on the destination).
I browse to the manifest file and under avlable components, it
displays the source portal to be restores. Under items, it
says 'ready' for the index, but for the portal site itself it
says, 'cannot be selected'. When I double click on it, I get a
message saying, "sps cannot restore databases for a portal in use.
Before restoring this portal, delete this site". But thats amazing !!!
should I delete this on the source server ???

Please advise. I dunno why nobody wants to answer this question.
Maybe its too easy.

I am trying to restore  on a diff machine  with a diff name, hence I
guess my restore options  might have to be diff. Using the GUI for
restore when I browse  to the manifest  file from the source  machine (I
copied the entire set of files  form the source to the destination
machine).
Then under avalabe comp -> protal sites -> it lists the source portal
site and 2 restore items. The index  which is ok to be restored and
the sitedbs which is not. It says it cannot be selected  as " sps
cannot restore froma sps  site that is in use. Before restoring  the
database, delete  this portal  site". This is what stumps me. The
portal site  is on a diff machine. The source machine and the portal
is named "sourceportal". The destination  machine is
named "destinationportal". Why should I delete the portal on a diff
machine.
