Restore a backup from another server

I recently tried to restore a backup from one server to another. I
essentially copied the .bak file from our main server onto the second
server's c: drive.

I ran the msdmback restore utilty, received an error message and
ultimately my installation of SharePoint became corrupt.

I didn't have the service pack installed on the server I tried to
restore on. Could this have been the problem?

What you were trying to do is exactly how our system runs for fault
tolerance... We have 2 sps servers @ sp1 At 9pm a scedule task backs up the
portal into file
system, copies the file to the same location on portal 2 and then scedules a
restore 5 minutes later.... This cycle has been working know for an extended
period of time and all is well (except for index propagation from a third
sps but thats another story.

So I would say withought a shadow of doubt you cannot restore an SP1 portal
into a no SP portal!!!! (I thought the SP1 schema was different any way?)
