Resetting Content Indexes in SPS 2003

Asked By: Wendy Warren         Date: Aug 19, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 273

I administer a medium SPS server farm. We have 4 portals setup for
departments.

Content error messages are appearing in the web server event log. I am also
seeing a Failure message display when I look at the search propogation list for
2 of the portals. 1 portal is showing this for both portal & non-portal content
The other is showing Failure for just the non-portal content.

I've done some research and it appears that the content indexes may be
corrupted. I am going to reset the content indexes for the 2 portals that show
Failure as explained above.

I have a few questions about doing the content index reset.
1) Do I reset both portal and non-portal content to zero before doing the full
update?
2) Will the full update of the non-portal content also update the portal
content?
3) Will this process have an effect on the other portals that are not being
reset?
