REQUIRED permission groups?

Asked By: Brendan    Date: Aug 18    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1433

I have a user that needs a very highly restricted access to their site
and was asking me which groups they could delete from their site
permissions and I realized I don't know.

Is there a guide out there as to which groups NEED to remain for a
site to function?

I notice a few groups sound vaguely technical in nature in terms of
them maybe needed to keep the site working:

Style Resource Readers
Quick Deploy Users

Do they need any of those groups? Can they just wipe it clean and
start with a restricted list of people?

First, the question should be which groups permission  levels can be
deleted. groups  themselves are stored where they are created. That
means the default groups like Members, Vistors, etc are actually stored
in the root level site. If you break inheritance at a child site  and
delete the group you are actually deleting the group from the top level
site and that is not what I think you intend.

Instead, what you want to do is remove the permission level that is give
to that group in your site after you break inheritance. That will
remove the group from the list  for your site, but it won't actually
delete the group.

As to which groups need to remain. Technically none. If you remove
permissions from all the groups the only one who will be able to access
the site is the site collection administrator. They always have Full
Control of sites in their site collection even though they don't show in
the permissions list on the site.
