Require client certificates breaks SSL (error = 2147221499)

I have SSL running on a Sharepoint extranet without problems. However,I'm
trying to require client certificates so I can implement cert mapping. Every
time I set "require client certificate", SSL breaks and I receive dashboard
error 2147221499. Only 2 other people have posted a similar problem on the
microsoft public sharepoint newsgroups (see links below) and neither of them
resolved the issue. Any suggestions?

Update:
According to Microsoft support, you cannot successfully require  or
accept client  certificates on Sharepoint Portal Server. It is
unknown as to when SPS will support this ability.
