Replicating Annoucement Webpart

Asked By: Haresh    Date: Oct 23    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 680

There is a need to replicate Announcement/ NEWS Webpart in the main
Dashboard. We need have Achievements corner, Message from Leadership
Team, various NEWS section, etc, which are much similar to an
Announcement / NEWS Webpart. I created respective folders under ‘Portal
Content’ folder of SPS Web Storage, but unable to list the content in
the main Dashboard. Tried to modify the Announcement / NEWS Webpart for
this, but was unsuccessful in modifying the code.

I want help in having multiple ‘Announcement’ Webpart (named
differently) referring to different folder under Portal Content folder.
At this moment I am using Announcement Webpart from SPS Resource Kit

When you create a new News folder  in Portal Content Folder your new web
part name has to be the same as new folder name.

No, it did not work. I want to replicate  Annoucement Webpart,
which i got from SPS Resource Kit CD. Do you have a NEWS publish
webpart.

I am very tight in timeline to implement this, quick help  is highly
appriciated.

Look for a post from me on microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver. I
don't guarantee it'll work as it's been a while since I've done it, but
should point you in the right direction.

This is no problem. However, the web  part you're importing is
configured to
take it's content  from a specific place (by default, Portal
Content/Announcements, let's say).

When you import that web part again, it too is getting it's content from
the
same place. So now you have two windows into the same data.

To change this, you can modify  the 2nd web part to get it's content from
other directory. It's easy to do with the Quick Links and News web
parts
because it's stored in the Web Part Advanced Properties (line 2).
However,
for Announcements, it's stored in the announce.xml file.

You'll have to create this directory and set it's properties so that it
can
contain announcement  document profiles. Then you set the web part in
the
advanced properties to point to that directory.

Example: you want the typical announcements PLUS a new list  of
announcements
about armchairs. Because as we all know, armchairs may change hourly,
and
we have to be kept up to date!

Steps:
- Create a new folder  somewhere, let's assume
/Documents/Products/ArmChairs
- Go to the properties of the folder -> Profiles and enable
Announcements as a profile
- Put some announcements in there
- Make a copy of announce.xml that's in Portal/Announcements_Files - I
drag
it to my desktop, then rename to Announce2.xml. Then edit with notepad.
Look for
<readfolder>http://[server]/[workspace]/Portal
Content/Announcements</readfolder>
and change it to your place, like /Documents/Products/ArmChairs above
- Copy it back in to the Portal/Announcements_Files directory
- Import your Announcements web part, then go to
properties of the web part, go to Advanced Settings and
where it says announce.xml, change it to announce2.xml

Now it should get it's announcements from that place.

It's been a while since I've done this, so I may be a little off in
places.

You might instead wish to use Quick Links web part or News, as it's
location
isn't in an XML file but instead in the web part advanced settings
itself as
line 2. That way, you just have to create the folder, apply the
profile
and point line 2 to your new folder. It's very easy and quick.
