Replace the Home Page with a custom template

Im quite new to SPS 2003, and hence these may be a very obvious
questions...

Basically, I want to customise the portal I am developing, and want to
replace the OOTB home page with a custom home page that i have created.
How do I go about doing this...?

Secondly, how do I create a top level area which is based on my own
custom template...?
