Renaming a SPS 2003 Portal

Asked By: Brian    Date: Nov 17    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 874

I have a medium farm production environment that needs to be renamed.

Currently the name of the Portal is the DNS name of the Cluster NLB
interface (blah.us.bosch.com). Folks now want it to be a bit more user
friendly (friendly.us.bosch.com). I don't need to rename the Netbios
names of the servers, just the Portal itself, so I'm not sure I need to
do much of anything in Q830970.

Can I just rename the "Portal Site Name and Description" and then change
the host header information on the IIS front end boxes? Does anyone
know if this will break the WSS sites inside the portal or not? Is
there anything else that would need to be done (other than set up a DNS
alias for "friendly.us.bosch.com" of course)?

My recommendation will be to

Rename the DNS host to point to the IP address of the cluster
Go in Sharepoint Central Administration, select Configure alternate portal  site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access
Select your portal, click on Edit
Enter the new DNS name in Intranet URL

This force Sharepoint to perform translation in any links
