Renaming portal

Asked By: Tapasvi    Date: Dec 31    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 994

we have an old dilapidated intranet our portal is going to
replace. But for a while we will need to run both of them. When we are
finished with the old one, we'd like to rename the new one with the
old one's name. Is this possible without breaking all the links in new
SPS site?

i.e. if our intranet was named 'Townsville.' And we are building a
portal to replace it called 'devTownsville.' 6-12 months from now we
want to turn off 'Townsville' and rename 'devTownsville' into
'Townsville.'

As long as there is no issue with both names being valid (to handle a few corner
cases where the old URL might appear for a while) , you can just setup an
alternate access URL in SPS for "Townsville", make the DNS change from the old
server to the new server, and it should all just work once the DNS entry
propogates
