Renaming internal column name in list

Asked By: Jamie    Date: May 22    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 10863

When I initally created a custom list with a bunch of columns, I
mistakingly named a couple of columns wrong and later renamed them by
going into 'Modify settings and columns'. This all works great, but
does not rename the internal name of the column. That remains what it
was originally named. Is there a way to change this internal name?
I'm assuming it needs to be done within the database, but not sure how
to go about that. Or, is this not recommended?

Let go of the mouse and step away from the keyboard. Forget about the internal
name.

I would not change  the database  mostly due to the fact that once you
do Microsoft will not support your installation of SharePoint.

However, the internal  name for the columns  can be pain if you need to
access the list  through a web service. What I have done in the past is
create a new column  with the correct name then use the datasheet view
to copy and paste all the data over then delete the old column. This
seems to work.

I'll probably choose the route of
creating new columns  and moving the data over.

Changing the database  is never recommended. Add a new column  and
manually (using the datasheet view) or programmatically move the data
from the old column to the new column.
