remove / delete Content Type from DocLib - how ?

Asked By: Cleveland    Date: Oct 21    Category: MOSS    Views: 994

How do you remove the association of a ContentType with a DocLib?

None of the blogs suggestions work. I even deleted all items from the DocLib, I
still get the err msg "content type is still in use."

1. Change all the documents in the Library so they are a different
content type.

2. Make sure there are no documents in the regular or site collection
owner's recycle bin using the content type

3. In the List settings screen click on the content type you want to
remove.

4. On the setting for the list content type click delete this content
type.

That should do it.

I could not follow Paul's advice because I do not know how to "change the
content type" of an existing item in a DocLib.

However, I found out that the problem was a "common column" between the three
content types, "title." So I guess SP thought CT2 & CT3 were in use even
though all docs were based on CT1.

1) empty re-cycle bin
2) delete ALL docs (I had previously deleted only CT2 &CT3)
3) now remove CT2 & CT3 from the DocLib (it works now)
4) get docs back from re-cycle bin

To change the content type of a document in a library simply edit the meta
data properties of the document. You'll get a dropdown where you can choose
a different content type.
