There is an implicit checkout  that occurs when you choose edit  document in
an Office application from the smart menu for a binary in a document
library. This checkout will last as long as you have the document open in
the editor.

Or you can explicitly Checkout the document from the smart menu. Edit the
document at will. No one else will be able to upload a version of the binary
until you check it back in or an administrator overrides your checkout.
