Recycle bin in WSS3.0

Asked By: Bennie    Date: Dec 08    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 3150

I have a test site collection that resides on a test server that has WSS
3.0. We were doing some testing with the recycle bin and found that
when we deleted a site (child site) that it did not appear in the user
recycle bin or the site collection recycle bin. I went back and checked
the settings in Central Admin and all is set correctly.

The recycle bin status is ON

Deleted items in Recycle Bin is set to After 30 days

The second stage Recycle bin is set to Add 50 percent

Is there some other settings I should look for? Any suggestions are
greatly appreciated.

Nothing above a list goes into the recycle  bin by design. deleted  sites
are permanently deleted. You would need a backup to recover them.

according to the Step by Step WSS 3.0 on page 73, it explicitly
states that "You can restore a site  from a Recycle bin  up to 30 days, by
default, after it has been deleted."

If it really says that, it's an error.

Sorry, but the book is wrong. If you check the "What's New in Windows
SharePoint Services 3.0" page at the Office online site  you will find
that it explicitly states:

"The Recycle Bin can store lists, libraries, folders, list items,
documents, and Web Part Pages."

No mention of sites. I've also verified that by my own testing. You
can recover a whole list or library, but not a site. A lot of these
books were written during the beta time frame and can have a few
inaccuracies. This is evidently one of them.

deleted site  do not go into the Recycle
Bin. You can get that functionality with this codeplex project,
www.codeplex.com/.../ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseI
d=3830. It will capture sites and webs when they're deleted  and save
them to the file system. It's pretty nice, and the price is right.
