Reader access to the Portal

Asked By: Brent    Date: Nov 11    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 586

User accessing WSS site with just Reader access see's menu options
for which they do not have rights. When they click on them the
windows login prompt appears. Is there a way to configure WSS so
that the menu options/links only appear if the user has access?

This behaviour is apparently by design. There are some blogs that describe various techniques for overcoming the issue but none of them are clean and are executed with risk.

Biggest complaint quite a few people have (see: andrewconnell.com/blog/archive/2004/10/06/518.aspx)... Has my $.02, as well as some others opinions.

Dustin (http://www.sharepointblogs.com/dustin/) & Bob Mixon (http://www.sharepointblogs.com/bmixon/) have recently come up with a solution that seems viable… interesting method:
