Random crashes and SPPSP1

We have been experiencing apparently random, devastating crashes of
our SharePoint Portal. When it dies, the service will not restart. We
have restored from backup and the service will run for a day or so
and crash again. There are no error messages, simply a dead server.
The O/S (Win 2000) continues running.

So, has anyone else seen this? Is there a fix? Our IT guys want to
blame "data corruption" but all we've been doing is building
dashboards, simple web parts and checking-in documents - nothing even
slightly exotic.

Also, does anyone have experience with the Service Pack (SPPSP1)? Is
it better? Worse? About the same?

Did you try repairing the installation ?

Yeah, tried repair, tried restore from backup, each repeatedly.
Nothing worked. Does Microsoft offer any support on this?

Do you see anything in the Event Log when the server "crashes" ?

Nothing in the event logs, no error messages - the service simply
stops running and will not restart.

We have had the same problems over and over again. We have tried everything
int the book to get that damn thing running. We did severeal times but after
a while it shut down again. Right now i did only some slight things and it
went off again.

We have tried SP1 and it did do nothing.

I think we will go for another application because this seems not to work.
Damn it this cost so much time and money and our nerves.

Yes, we did try, but nothing changed. It still didn`t work. We even
deinstalled W2K and tried to restore the workspace after the umpteenth
installation of SPS. We got an automation error and SPS went off again. Now
we have done it by installing SP1 and downgrading the jetengine but still I
get errors and only after reboot the system is up again. Don't want to know
when it will say farewell again.

We saw in the Sharepoint-groups that we are not the only ones with the same
or slightly different problems. There seems to be no support from MS.
