Does anyone know how I can permission a quick link that points to an
internal webpage on our network but is not located within the
sharepoint portal? I don't want the link to appear at all if the user
does not have the correct permission. What I tried to do was create a
link inside of a list and permission the list properly but then
reference the link within the list on the quick link bar, however the
linked remained when I logged in as a user that was not suppose to have
access to it, but when I clicked on the link itself I got the
unauthorized access message. I did not however accomplish what I
really want to do and that is for the link to dissapear if they do not
have access. I hope this makes sense!

I have not used the quicklinks  before, but have you though about maybe using audiences? This probably wont work if there needs to be other links in the webpart that all users should see. The only other suggestion I can think of is write a webpart that exposes the data by checking the permissions based on a field that you create  within the list. If you need furhter clarification let me know.

However the link  in QuickLinks is a unique, separate item with it’s own security and has no knowledge of the security settings of the object that it references.

Security trimming the interface in WSS v2 is too large a challenge for
most people to undertake. I know that I gave up after just a few days.

However, if you are just trying to hide a given link  in a given
situation, that is certainly possible. The "correct permission" will
need to be identified on the server and output as a value captured in a
JavaScript variable. From that point forward, everything else can be
done client-side.
