QuickLaunch Link to "new item" for list fails

  Asked By: Kami    Date: Jan 16    Category: MOSS    Views: 2134

On a MOSS site, I want to put a link on QuickLaunch panel to the "new form" for
a custom list. I can, it opens form OK, but if user "canels" to exit the form,
SP dies. I guess it does not know where to "go back to." I have not tried the
case where form is populated and then user hits "OK." Maybe it fails also.

Can I fix this from the GUI or with SPD? If so how?

What does your new form link  look like? Have you used a Source attribute in
the URL?

The way if did this was, go to the list  you want to create the new item  in.
Click "New" and you will get a URL string after NewForm.aspx. Copy everything
including the site  collection. You will see the last parameter is the Source
URL. The default behaviour for the list is bring the user  back to the default
view for the list. In my case, I wanted to bring the user back  to the main
portal page at http://MOSS. So I updated the Source parameter.

The URL that I copied & pasted into the link  on the QuickLaunch follows:
==================
symdocs.symad.symantec.com/.../NewF\
orm.aspx?RootFolder=%2Fsites%2Fsox%2Dia%2Ddev%2Fencv2%2FLists%2FName%5FBuilder&S\
ource=http%3A%2F%2Fsymdocs%2Esymad%2Esymantec%2Ecom%2Fsites%2Fsox%2Dia%2Ddev%2Fe\
ncv2%2FLists%2FName%
==================
I just re-built it, to re-test, still fails  and kills SP (when I "go to link",
then "cancel" on the "new form").

Also, I went to the list  itself, hit "new" button, then "cancel", all is OK,
navigates back  to the list page as expected.

what is the url you want the user  to return when they have completed the
new item  entry or have canceled the entry?

Replace:
Source=http%3A%2F%2Fsymdocs%2Esymad%2Esymantec%2Ecom%2Fsites%2Fsox%2Dia%2Ddev%2F\
encv2%2FLists%2FName%

With: Source=http://the_url_you_want_the_user_to_return_to
