Quick launch and permissions

Asked By: Virgil    Date: Feb 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5152

I have created several calendar list and they show in the left side
navigation. I am a power user, when i have another user log-in i only
want them to see there calendar list on the left side navigation, but
may want them to have read permissions on other users calendar list. So
in short how do you control permissions for the quick launch to
show/hide links on navigation links while still allowing the user to
view other users calendars.

In the Quick Launch, as long as a user  has at least "Read" permission on
a list, they will see the link to that list. So, if I understand you
correctly, you've created  several calendars, one for each user (or
department or something), and you only want the logged in user to see
the link to their calendar  for themself, but you still want them to be
able to read  and navigate to other calendars, maybe using "view all site
content" or something.

Here's an idea:
It depends on what the calendar is associated with exactly. Is the
calendar name the same as the user's display name, or their department
name?

Create a links list  on your site, and put in the links  for each of these
calendars, and put in metadata that will associate each calendar with a
department name or user name.

Put this links list as a web part on your page, and put the Current User
Filter web part on your page (MOSS Enterprise only). Set up the Current
user filter to look at the department name field (or whatever), and then
connect the current user filter web part to the links list web part,
using that department name as the common field.
