Question about the indexing server role

Asked By: Eleanor    Date: Feb 06    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 892

I'm planning on adding a server to my 2003 SPS/WSS 2.0 server farm.

I currently have one front end handling all roles.

We have a seperate DB server running our SP DB's on SQL 2005.

The plan is to add a 3rd server into the mix strictly to handle
indexing.

Plan on using a VMWare machine.

Anybody got any experience running SPS 2003 with the indexing role on a
VMWare machine?

VMWare don't be officially supported, but it does work. You'll need to
make the 3rd machine both index and job (medium farm).

In your opinion would it be wise to wait for a Friday
to throw this into production...so we have at least
the weekend to get through the initial crawl?

We have about 98 sites in our environment.

The number of sites won't really tell you how long the crawl will take -
it's more about the overall number and types of items. In general
through, making a change like this during "off hours" is a good plan.
